HAWKE’S BAY ENGINEERS WITH SOUL

the engineering co in onekawa, napier, are the best engineering companies in hawkes bay and specialise in on-site servicing and general engineering

Leading the way for Engineering in Hawke’s Bay.

The backstory goes like this: waaaay back in 2020 when things were (relatively) normal and instead of pandemics and cyclones all we had to worry about was career satisfaction, lead engineer at Foot Engineering Services in Napier, Dan Tong, decided to give a years’ notice just for the hell of it.

He wanted excitement. He wanted adventure. He wanted a change. What he got was a business. And as anyone with a small business in Hawke’s Bay could tell you lately, that’s shorthand for a few new grey hairs.

But when you love what you do, you’re not afraid to work hard and the result is that after four years and one rebrand, The Engineering Co. is Hawke’s Bay’s leading engineering firm and only full-service, on-site engineering company in the region. Dan nailed it!

Of course behind every good man and business there’s a usually a good woman and a bunch of talented dudes, and that’s where wife and business partner Rosie, and the highly-skilled team at The Engineering Co. comes in.

All of them bring different skills to the business, but the one thing that unites them is they’re hungry to fix things and they all drove their mums crazy by ripping shit apart when they were kids.

Engineering is in the DNA of everyone at The Engineering Co. and the result is a team of people who love nothing better than fixing the unfixable and taking something broken and rebuilding it better.

Meet the Team

  • Dan

Director Dan, the ultimate jack of all trades and the reason we take so much pride in fixing the unfixable.

Whether it’s a breakdown, new fabrication project or general engineering work, Dan is your main point of contact for getting this underway.

There are times you’ll find him out on-site in HOTGLU, one of our purpose-built field service utes. He’s still always just a phonecall away when we need to utilise that wealth of knowledge he’s accumulated over the past 15+ years of Engineering passion.

The only thing Dan loves more than fixing a mean machine is driving one…preferably into the Kaimanawas on a hunting trip with the wife.

  • Admin Excellence Maximise your uptime.

    Bex

While the guys make magic happen on-site and in the workshop, Bex is the true magician, making sure the wheels that turn the beautiful machine that is The Engineering Co. keep spinning.

Bex is our Office Manager and an absolute ray of sunshine, keeping the lads in line and the admin mahi on point.

We have only recently found Bex, (or she found us!) and we already can't imagine what life was like without her on the team.

  • rosie-tong-the-engineering-co

    Rosie

Rosie (co-owner) keeps an eye on things in the background, ensuring we keep on track with our goals and live in to our values.

When Dan is on-site, you may get Rosie answering your call. she’ll work together with the rest of our team to ensure we have a solution for you or an engineer on the way to you, as soon as possible, to maximise your uptime.

When she’s not crunching numbers, brainstorming marketing ideas or planting more flowers than our entrance planter boxes can handle, you’ll find her enjoying the outdoors on some kind of bike or with a rifle over one shoulder and Sika hindquarters over the other.

  • Luke

After 12 years on the tools, we reckon Luke’s earned the lofty title of ‘Senior Engineer.’ He’s been with The Engineering Co. from the beginning and if you need someone for a curly problem off-site, he’s your man. The best part about the job for Luke is the satisfaction that comes from finding an engineering fix for a client that leaves their gear better and stronger than it was brand new.

Luke isn’t one to let life pass him by, always on the go with a project or adventure in the mix. His 80series LandCruiser is good as new now he’s worked his magic, & you can be sure he’ll never be too far from a two-wheeler.

  • Steve

If you want to see a man happy in his work, come down to our Napier workshop when Steve is behind the welder. Nothing gets his grin on quite like fabricating a sexy new catwalk or creating one of our custom-designed OPS guards.

Steve was with our predecessor, Foot Engineering, for a decade before joining The Engineering Co. and he’s part of the furniture at the workshop. We won’t talk about comfy old leather couches and Steve in the same breath but you sure do need one of each in your life, right?

Steve is passionate about his family ofcourse, but you’ll really see that sparkle in his eye when it comes to his classic cars & we are all envious of his road-trips on the motorcycles to Burt Munro or across route-66!

  • Simon

A former aircraft engineer, Simon’s official title is ‘Way Over-Qualified Machinist’. We often have to remind him 'this doesn't have to fly, Simon.’

If you’ve got some seriously munted gear or a reeeeaaaalllly complicated project, he’s your man and the job won’t be done until it’s 110% right. We love him for his wicked sense of humour and ability to come up with the coolest ideas when he’s in bed (not even on the clock!).

Simon doesn’t do his 40 hours in the machine shop and call it a day, no, he heads out to his paddocks to produce some of the finest lucern, restore his car, or enjoy a ride on his motorcycle.

  • Josh

Not quite born with a welder in his hand, Josh wasn’t far off, starting his engineering career at 15 years old, straight out of school. That’s how you get such a fine specimen of male flesh with the experience of an old dude.

You'll find Josh line dancing to cotton-eye Joe, in our Onekawa workshop turning his hand to any repair or fabrication work.

After hours Josh doesn’t mind a few rounds of golf, a fishing trip or getting amongst motorsport.

  • Zach

Our on-site mahi man, Zach would probably live in his truck, WLD RIG, if we didn’t call and tell him it’s home time. Such is his passion for fixing the unfixable, he’s been known to make a tent with a tarpaulin to get the job done in pouring rain.

On the rare occasion Zach is in the workshop, you can’t miss the sense of humour and banter keeping us all honest.

It’s a no brainer he’s destined for field service engineering, in the few hours of the week he’s not mahi hard, you’ll still find Zach outdoors, rural living, hunting or adventuring.

  • Wendy

We really are a family business, with Rosie’s mum on the team. Admin extraordinaire, Wendy is the glue that holds The Engineering Co. together. Without her, no one gets paid and you don’t get billed.

We might just be the only engineering workshop in the universe with fresh flowers and that’s just one of the small things we love about Wendy.

With a heap of grand kids, Wendy is now busier than ever enjoying grandma life and squeezing in adventures in her camper or hikes along the great walks whenever there’s a spare moment.

  • Napier Engineering Specialists

    Anaru

An absolute pumper, and experienced welder, Anaru embodies everything ‘Doing The Mahi’ stands for.

He has jumped at the opportunity to diversify his skill set with the variety of big gear we have coming in the door here at The Engineering Co. and it won’t be long before his Mech Eng Trade cert. is framed on the wall.

    #getthetreats

When he clocks out of work, Anaru is smashing goals & life with his beautiful family. He’s keen on a round or two of golf, getting outdoors and keeping fit.

  • Jamie

Whether it’s on-site doing engineering repairs and maintenance or getting creative with a welder in the Napier workshop, you can rely on Jamie for his awesome attitude and determination to find a solution to any gnarly engineering problems.

After a few years of proving himself and chugging through the paperwork, he’s now in the final months of his apprenticeship and has dreams one day of getting his underwater welding ticket. Given the soggy nature of our forestry support work after the Cyclone, we reckon he’s half qualified already!

  • Napier Apprentice Welder Engineer

    Hamish

Hamish began with us as work experience and earned himself an apprenticeship spot on the team. Hamish has quickly found a liking to field service mahi out in the elements and isn’t a stranger to being covered in hauler grease.

We are proud to share his most recent achievement has been passing not only his downhand but also his vertical up mig welding tickets.

When he’s not getting shown the ropes at mahi, he’s likely playing rugby & dodging milking cows on the family farm.

The values that drive us in life also drive the work we do…

SOUL

We don’t just like what we do...we love it, we live it, we feel it. Fixing the unfixable gives us a sense of purpose and achievement in life.

Work is a place to connect with like-minded humans traveling the same path and the teamwork that comes from solving a problem and getting people and machines back in business is what drives us.

PARTNERSHIP

Your emergency is our emergency. We are an extension of your team, your specialist man-on-the-ground when needed. It’s not just transactional - we genuinely care about the impact of downtime so we go above and beyond to respond and repair fast.

We don’t have ‘staff’ we have a team, and we support our team to live their best life. We understand the life goals of everyone in our team and support them to be achieved.

UPTIME

Downtime is the enemy. We know how your business works and how important it is to respond and repair fast and first time.

KEEPING IT REAL

We are a Kiwi business and believe in the old-fashioned Kiwi values of honesty, being straight up, having a laugh and that effort brings reward. We like a good yarn but understand that hard graft comes first and time means money. We believe in community and helping out - whether you are a friend or a stranger.
